Autumn Aspen

The golds and yellows of aspen in Autumn are striking. Most trees look great as the leaves change colour, but aspen stand out even against that backdrop.

In most of the UK aspen occurs as a tree or two standing alone in mixed woodland, yet in the Cairngorms there are small woodlands almost entirely of aspen. This rarity means a beautiful natural canvas of colour rarely seen anywhere else in the country.

Aspen stands are most common in Strathspey and any walk or drive from Grantown-on-Spey in the North to Kingussie and Newtonmore in the South will be dotted with aspen. However if you want to guarantee a spectacle the RSPB Insh Marshes reserve offers some of the best views.
