Autumn Arrivals

A sure sign of Autumn is the arrival of birds coming to spend winter in the Cairngorms.

Pink-footed and greylag geese honk their way across the sky in the familiar drawn out V – formations. This is to save energy as the goose in front does all the hard work pushing through the air and the ones behind can follow behind. Then they swap over and each take their turn at the front.

Whooper swans, teal and widgeon also come from Iceland and Greenland to spend winter in the Cairngorms, easily seen at the RSPB Insh Marshes National Nature Reserve.
